Abstract/Summary:
This work analyzes the Inka power structures utilizing the 'Elementary Hierarchical Model' (EHM). The EHM introduced in this study incorporates conceptualizations from Elementary Theory and Agency Theory to explain how power is exercised through a hierarchical structure. The EHM includes four necessary conditions for power centralization: (1) officials' payments in salary, (2) chain mobility, (3) documentation system, and (4) a hierarchical branched structure. Findings show that despite the inclusion of traditional cultural practices, the Inka's political and military organizations functioned in accordance with the EHM put forth in this study. By encouraging obedience from officials and subjects, the Inka military and political organizations succeeded in centralizing power.
