This study aims to assess the effect of external business environmental factors on megaproject performance in an infrastructure project in Bangladesh.A review of related literature and exploration of the theoretical framework provided more insight into the various effects of the factors of the environment on megaproject performance. The six factors of the external business environment that were examined included with political factor, economic factor, social & cultural factor, technological factor, legal factor, and environmental factor which formed the independent variable. While two factors of megaproject performance were the dependent variable namely time performance and cost performance. The target population of the study was 1087 and the sample size was 220 employees working in the project. Two hundred twenty questionnaires were sent to the different sites of the projects with the help of the team of local guys. The total number of valid respondents is 109.Descriptive statistic was used to analyze the data and draw conclusions.Stratified random sampling was used to choose the actual elements of the study sample. The questionnaire was translated into Chinese for the connivance of Chinese employees working in the project data from the questionnaires was coded and entered into a computer for analysis using excel spreadsheets. The data was described, explained, and presented by the use of tables, from which various conclusions and recommendations were made.A regression analysis was performed to test the hypothesis. All the tests were performed by using the statistical software SPSS version 21.The tools employed were Reliability test,Mean score,Spearman correlation,Kendall‘s coefficient. The results show the correlation among all external business environment factors is positive except political factor with legal factor. Moreover, all external business environment dimensions have positive correlations with different factors of megaproject performance. The result of the Spearman correlation analysis of time and cost performance with the identified factors affecting megaproject performance revealed that the external business environment had a significant relationship with time performance on p-values of 0.004 and cost performance with a p-value of 0.001 respectively. Finally, the research gap is proposed for future studies including studies in developing countries. The researcher also recommended leadership and firm structure as other factors that could affect megaproject performance for further study.Project management practitioners could be benefited from this study by providing specific constructs that can be applied towards improving the current approaches to project management. |
