Internationalization speed has become the focus of international business literature.Different from the traditional gradual internationalization,the internationalization of enterprises shows a more flexible internationalization process nowadays.As the latecomer in the international market,Chinese enterprises not only lack the support of resources and experience in internationalization,but also suffer the weaker legitimacy which is known as “the liability of foreignness”.In order to reverse the situation,Chinese enterprises begin to take a more radical way to enter the international market as to gain first-mover advantage.Therefore,this study discusses the measuring system of Chinese enterprise's internationalization speed.By analyzing data collected from 269 Chinese firms in the Yangtze River Delta area using regression analysis and qualitative comparative analysis,this study also discovers the determines and the configuration combinations in improving the speed of internationalization.Main conclusions of this study are as follows:Firstly,this study proposes that the internationalization speed of Chinese enterprises includes three dimensions: speed of learning,speed of committing,and speed of legitimation,basing on the reality of Chinese enterprises.Chinese enterprise,as the main participants in the international arena,needs to update the measurement of the internationalization speed.For Chinese enterprises,although they still need to carry out a series of learning and commitment activities in the international market,they also need to pay attention to the international market's recognition of their legitimacy.The degree of legitimacy of an enterprise determines whether the enterprise can survive and operate in the international market,especially when the enterprise operates from the home country with low legitimacy to the host country with high legitimacy.Secondly,the regression analysis confirms that business intelligence,as an information and communication technology,can provide timely,adequate and effective information to the internationalization enterprises,and the information gathered can help enterprises to form a comprehensive cognition to the international competitive market,thus enterprises can learn international market and allocate resource effectively,and gain higher legitimacy,which improve the internationalization speed.In addition,this study also clarifies that organizational agility plays a mediating role between business intelligence and the internationalization speed,and the cultural distance plays a negative moderating role between organizational agility and the internationalization speed.Finally,the fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis finds some configuration combinations that promotes the internationalization speed of Chinese enterprises.Specifically,enterprise ownership * market capitalizing agility,enterprise ownership * operational adjustment agility are two configuration combinations that promoting the speed of learning and speed of committing;market capitalizing agility *(enterprise ownership/age),operational adjustment agility *(enterprise ownership/age),business intelligence * enterprise age are these three configurations to improve the speed of legitimation.These different configurations show that there are some different ways to realize a higher speed of internationalization.To sum up,this paper combines the literature of international business and information system.From the perspective of knowledge,this paper discusses the impact of business intelligence to the Chinese enterprise's internationalization speed,and confirms the mediating role of organizational agility,and the moderating role of cultural distance.In addition,this study finds some configuration combinations in improving the internationalization speed by fuzzy qualitative comparative analysis.These results not only provide a new theoretical perspective for the internationalization literature of enterprises in emerging economies,but also greatly expand the research scope in the field of international business.
