Workplace negative gossip refers to negative evaluation comments on third-persons who are not present.Workplace negative gossip is common in the workplace and has an important impact on employees in the organization.This impact is both positive and negative.Previous studies have focused more on the negative impact of workplace negative gossip,ignoring its potential positive impact on the organization.Therefore,unlike previous studies,this study aims to explore the positive effects of workplace negative gossip and investigate the possible mediating effect,the moderating effect and the moderated mediating effect by three studys.Firstly,in Experiment 1(N=129),a sample of students was used to test the effect of negative gossip on workplace deviant behavior.When an individual feels that his / her deviant behavior has been negatively gossiped by other colleagues,he / she will have more willingness to reduce his / her deviant behavior.At the same time,experiment 1 also found that individual's worry significantly mediated the relationship between negative gossip and workplace deviant behavior.Secondly,experiment 2(N=221)examined the moderating effect of power on the relationship between negative gossip,worry and mianzi through a sample of employees.For individuals with high power,when they perceive negative gossip about their deviant behavior,they will have less worry and mianzi threat.At the same time,experiment 2 also successfully tested the moderated mediating effect of power.Finally,experiment 3(N=218)also tested the moderating effect of status and the moderating mediating effect model through the sample of on-the-job employees.Unfortunately,this study's conjecture about status has not been supported,but it has also found some conclusions contrary to our previous assumptions,that is,the status negative regulates the relationship between negative gossip and the willingness to reduce workplace deviant behavior,and the willingness of those in high status to reduce workplace deviant behavior is significantly lower than those in low status.From a theoretical perspective,this study enriches the relevant research on workplace negative gossip,and points out the positive binding effect of workplace negative gossip,which is conducive to expanding the research field of workplace negative gossip;From a practical perspective,this study is useful to help management.re-examine the role of workplace negative gossip,recognize the positive impact of workplace negative gossip,and provide an effective way to prevent and control workplace deviat behavior.
