Study On The Influence Of Imported Intermediate Product Quality On Total Factor Productivity Of China's Manufacturing Industry

Product quality plays an important role in specialized production and international trade,and total factor productivity is an important indicator to measure the efficiency,type,source and quality of economic growth.In the process of high-quality development,China will further improve the quality of imported intermediate products,promote the growth of total factor productivity and build a manufacturing industry with international competitiveness,which is of great significance for improving the overall level of China's economic development and building a quality power.Based on the product trade data of CEPII-BACI database from 2003 to 2016,this paper studies the impact of imported intermediate product quality on total factor productivity of China's manufacturing industry.The unit value method developed by Schott(2004)was used to measure the quality of imported intermediates,and the total factor productivity method based on the DEA-Malmquist index method constructed by Fare et al.(1994)was used to compare and analyze the measurement results.Based on the fixed effect model and generalized method of moments,the positive correlation between the quality of imported intermediate products and total factor productivity of manufacturing industry is obtained.The research conclusions of this paper include: firstly,the quality of imported intermediate products in China presents an overall increasing trend year by year,and the quality of imported intermediate products from developed countries is higher than that from developing countries;The product quality of medium and high technology industry shows a steady rising trend,while the product quality of medium and low technology industry shows a fluctuating declining trend.Secondly,the quality of imported intermediate products has a significant positive impact on total factor productivity of manufacturing industry.There are two effects of import on productivity,namely learning effect and complementary effect.The influencing mechanism and degree of the effect are determined by the technical level of the importing country and industry.On the whole,the quality of imported intermediate goods can promote the total factor productivity of manufacturing industry.The empirical results from different levels show that the quality of imported intermediate products has a positive correlation with the productivity of different types of industries.When the quality of imported intermediate goods promotes the total factor productivity of China's manufacturing industry,its learning effect plays a major role.Industry size also has a positive impact on total factor productivity.Finally,corresponding policy suggestions are given from the government and enterprises.The innovation of this paper is that,first of all,based on the quality of imported intermediate products,the impact of imports on the total factor productivity of manufacturing industry will be more comprehensively studied.Secondly,the quality of imported intermediate products and total factor productivity are measured,and the mechanism of the influence of the quality of imported intermediate products on the total factor productivity of the manufacturing industry is deeply studied.
