The competition among companies has become fiercer as a result of rapid economic growth and acceleration of globalization. To survive and excel in the competition in the everchanging market,a company has to be able to stay ahead of its competitors in offering new products and reducing the time of R&D cycles. In recent years, companies have gradually realized that more efficiency in the R&D area relies on optimized project management.QF Company, which the author is part of,has experienced constant drops in market shares recently resulted from delays in launching new products. The delays in launching new products can be attributed to delays in R&D projects, which can be further attributed to the project management processes involved in the R&D.In light of this, this paper aims to offer remediations to the delays in R&D projects experienced by QF Company using theories about project progress management.First, this paper summarizes the issues related to project progress management based on the status quo at QF Company: the key issue is the lack of rationalized progress planning and control.Second, this paper creates a more scientific and rational progress plan with an example of the R&D project of F910,using WBS,CPM,and PERT.This paper then proposes a project progress approach based on the processes of project progress monitoring, progress deviation analysis, and progress adjustment and related theories. The drawbacks of the traditional progress control's application in the F910 project are pointed out and corresponding improvements and controls are discussed in the context of the buffer setting and monitoring in the critical chain method. Finally, this paper suggests guarantee measures for the project progress management at QF Company. This paper plans the project progress for the F910 at QF Company based on scientific approaches and thereby effectively resolves issues related the planning of the R&D projects. The proposed progress control based on buffer is suitable for the F910 project and resolves delays from human factors such as “student syndrome” and “Parkinson's law”.These progress planning and control ensures the on-time(and even ahead-of-schedule)completion of the F910 project. The theories and approaches discussed in this paper offer important values for QF Company and its peers on improving project progress management and accelerating the R&D projects.
