Abstract/Summary:
In the 1970 s,after many African countries gained independence, governments prioritized the development of industries such as agriculture, fisheries and mining to ensure socio-economic development.Since then, tourism has gradually been recognized as one of the main sources of economic income. Some countries in Africa, such as Egypt,Kenya, and South Africa, have used a wealth of forest resources to carry out some safari-themed tourism projects. As these projects unfold, the country’s demand for tourism talents is gradually increasing.Under the stimulus, there has been a small tourism school focusing on cooking teaching, which enables those who want to engage in tourism-related industries to receive basic service training.Later,in order to better meet the needs of tourists, the government began to strengthen the construction of tourism colleges, focusing on the training of professional students such as room service, reception services and catering services.Tourism colleges and universities have developed with the gradual construction of high-star tourism facilities. It is the main goal of these high-quality colleges to cultivate high-quality,high-level and high-skilled students. The history of tourism education in Mozambique is very similar to that in Egypt,Kenya and South Africa. However, tourism education in Mozambique is still in its infancy, and it is far from meeting the talent needs of the current tourism industry. The main manifestation is that the rapid growth of tourism infrastructure is inconsistent with the number of tourism personnel training. The difficulties faced by the development of tourism education are small scale, slow development, low level, lack of targeted aims, and poor quality of personnel training, which leads to problems such as reduced quality of tourism services. Therefore, from the analysis of the current situation of tourism education in Africa,an in-depth study of the characteristics of African tourism education is conducive to the study of the development of tourism education in Mozambique.Based on the analysis of relevant literature and the results of field investigations, this paper takes Mozambique as the research object, analyzes and sorts out the status of affairs and characteristics of tourism education in Mozambique, and discusses the main problems and causes of tourism education in Mozambique. At the same time, the evaluation and expectation of students and teachers on tourism education in Mozambique have been comprehensively investigated from the perspectives of students and teachers of tourism majors. The survey results show that Mozambique’s tourism education still has many shortcomings, students are not satisfied enough, teachers believe that the quality of students in tourism majors is not good enough, students attitudes are not good, and the number of tourism institutions and government guidance are the main challenges facing tourism education in Mozambique.Another aspectis that the Mozambican government is constantly promoting new public policies with the main goal of developing tourism education.Tourism companies have noticed the importance of employee education and are guided by the form of professional training for employees. In the end, this paper proposes some suggestions for improve the tourism education in Mozambique.
