Abstract/Summary:
Gratitude is the positive emotion that one feels when another person has intentionally given something valuable or expressed kindness.It can be divided into two dimensions: trait gratitude and state gratitude.Among them,state gratitude is a kind of positive emotion that can be stimulated by environmental factors and events and the attribution of the individual to the events.The duration of state gratitude is relatively short,and its intensity may change dramatically.In recent years,scholars have explored the possible antecedents and influence of gratitude.They found that people with gratitude tend to reciprocate and help those who have helped themselves and engage in more prosocial behaviors.Exploring what kind of workrelated factors may stimulate employees’ gratitude,and how gratitude will affect employees,may have certain practical value for managers and organizations.However,few studies have focused on the effect and significance of gratitude in the workplace.Therefore,this study attempts to enrich the academic research in the field of management and organizational behavior.Based on the Affective Events Theory and Cognitive Appraisal Theory of Emotion,this study firstly introduced feeling trusted and need satisfaction as antecedent variables,work engagement as the outcome variable,reciprocal awareness and workload as moderators.After finishing the literature review of those variables,a moderated mediation model has been constructed and the hypotheses have been proposed.Then,this paper collected data from situational experiments and daily-dairy research by distributing questionnaires,conducted statistical analyses in order to examine the theoretical models and proposed hypotheses.Finally,this study confirmed that employees’ daily feeling trusted from supervisor and daily need satisfaction could motivate employees’ daily state gratitude.Daily state gratitude further could enhance the daily work engagement.Daily state gratitude mediates the relationship between daily feeling trusted and daily work engagement.Reciprocal awareness and employees’ daily workload negatively moderate the mediation effect of daily state gratitude between daily feeling trusted and daily work engagement.In addition,gratitude has the short-lived characteristic and doesn’t have long-term stability.Feeling trusted and need satisfaction unable to maintain high level of gratitude of employees for a long time.State also cannot have continuous impact on work engagement.
