With the rapid development of the national economy, the seriousness of environmental problems such as resource abuse and ecological destruction has become increasingly prominent, making people fully aware that the coordinated development of the economy and the environment is the key to the long-term development of China’s economy.“Green Finance, has gradually become an important issue for financial instruments to promote environmental governance. In particular, for commercial bank that is one of financial pillars, how to implement national green financial policies and achieve green development within the entire society is a bad need for commercial banks to consider. This article first systematically reviews the domestic and foreign literature on the characteristics of senior management, green finance and internal incentives, finding that domestic research on green financial policies mostly stays at the theoretical level, and there are few relevant literature on empirical research;second, based on the theory of high-level echelon, decision theory and motivation theory,we finds that there are certain relationships between the characteristics of senior executives and the implementation of green financial policies of commercial banks, and the working mechanism is elaborated. On this basis,by referring to the theory of high-level echelon,it simultaneously measures the observable and unobservable characteristics of managers, with taking the regulatory effects of internal incentives into account. This paper takes 16 listed commercial banks as the research object to do a concrete empirical study of the influence of executive traits on the implementation of green financial policies of commercial banks. The results of the study indicate:About the influence of executive traits on the implementation of green financial policies of commercial banks:There is a significant correlation between the age, gender, education, and salary of senior executives and the implementation of the green financial policies of commercial banks.Specifically, the younger the executives are,the more they will help promote the implementation of green financial policies;the greater proportion of women executives and the higher the level of education, the more it can exert a positive influence on the implementation of green financial policies of commercial banks;and the executive compensation and the implementation of green financial policies have a negative correlation.About the regulation of internal incentives. The regression results show that there are indeed regulatory effects of equity incentives on the implementation of green financial policies of commercial banks, but there are differences in the performance of different features of senior executives.Equity incentives play a negative role in regulating senior management’s gender, executive compensation, and bank’s green financial policies, while playing a positive role in regulating the relationship between executive qualifications and the implementation of bank green financial policies. Therefore,in order to ensure the smooth implementation of green financial policies, listed banks need to consider the important role of the executive team as a decision maker. In the process of appointment and promotion of senior executives, breaking age and gender discrimination is good for commercial banks to adopt the advice of young and female executives;despite the fact that senior executives are not qualified for academic qualifications, they still need to pay attention to their educational background and professionalism;and to avoid brain drain, appropriate internal incentives can help banks establish an effective control and monitoring mechanism to provide an enabling environment for the smooth implementation of green financial policies.
