This dissertation first studied the research history of portfolio as authentic assessment in the visual arts education and summarized significant conclusions and experience.Then the Arts PROPEL case of applying and researching portfolio in the visual arts education was comprehensively introduced with a focus on the principles,standards,methods and processes of its portfolio application.Finally,an authentic assessment project with a two-period empirical study designed and conducted by the author were presented.The empirical study come to many conclusions including the authentic assessment is helpful to improve students' learning and creating in visual arts in a variety of aspects such as performance level of arts creating,creativity,aesthetic capability,confidence and others.
