| This study focuses on the impact of mobile media on left-behind children in rural areas, focusing on the impact of smart phones on left-behind children in terms of academic performance and lifestyle,so as to judge the impact of mobile media on the physical and mental health of left-behind children in rural areas.A questionnaire survey was conducted among 286 left-behind children from grade 5 to 9 in Haodian Town,Guangshui City,Hubei Province.SPSS 19.0 statistical analysis was used to quantify their mobile phone usage, learning performance and lifestyle. The results were explained by in-depth case interviews.Firstly, the use of mobile phones by left-behind children in rural areas shows a diversified trend. On the one hand, the entertainment function of left-behind children for mobile phones is not only reflected in games, but also in short video and live apps focusing on algorithms such as jitter. On the other hand,it is worth noting that nearly half of the respondents believe that searching for learning materials is the greatest use of smartphones.Secondly, there is no direct linear relationship between the learning performance of left-behind children in rural areas and the length of time they use mobile phones, but there is a significant negative relationship between the learning performance and the length of time they play games and watch short videos.Thirdly, there is a significant negative correlation between the length of mobile phone use of rural left-behind children and their satisfaction with their parents’relationship.Data show that space is no longer the main obstacle for children to communicate with their parents.Mobile phones greatly facilitate the communication between children and parents in time and space. However, children with bad relationship with their parents may use mobile phones to fill emotional gaps and thus be more distant from their parents, resulting in the situation that the more left-behind children want to be cared for,the farther away from their parents and the nearer to their mobile phones. Most of the respondents in this survey are in the adolescent rebellion period. They are easy to vent their real discontent into the virtual world of the network. When parents are not around or difficult to communicate, the virtual world becomes the scene environment for left-behind children to obtain emotional recognition and emotional catharsis.Fourthly, from the perspective of self-perception,left-behind children have a clear understanding of the impact of mobile phone use. From the objective data,on the one hand, most of the left-behind children still use mobile phones as a learning tool;on the other hand, the left-behind children’s subjective perception of using mobile phones is clear.Firstly, the longer they use mobile phones, the more they think that the use of mobile phones will have a negative impact on their academic performance.Secondly, the longer the mobile phone is used, the more clearly the left-behind children realize that their traditional playing time reduces and affects the length of sleep, which may lead to the adverse development of physical and mental health to a large extent. However, due to the lack of emotion and the recognition of the virtual world, the longer the left-behind children use mobile phones, the more they feel that they do not have enough time to use mobile phones, and hope to have more time to use smartphones. The result is that although they have a clear understanding of the harmfulness of mobile phone use,in the absence of parental supervision and peer-driven circumstance, the desire to use mobile phone may overcome cognitive rationality, and then the phenomenon of Left-behind children’s"mobile phone use eddy"appears, that is,a contradictory state of cognitive and behaviour on mobile phone. The conclusion of the study shows that the use of mobile phones has a certain impact on the physical and mental health of Left-behind children. However, due to the rapid development of science and technology, the full impact of mobile media on left-behind children in rural areas has just emerged.Based on this, this paper puts forward corresponding policy suggestions from two aspects:mobile media control and the optimization of education environment. |
