The new definition problem is that the propositioner first gives a new concept,a new arithmetic,or the nature of an abstract function,etc.Then ask the students to follow this "new definition" to solve the problem.The "new definition" questions are relatively novel and contain abundant information,which can better test the students’ ability to analyze and solve problems.However,in the practical teaching process,students have many difficulties in understanding the new definition problem.Through questionnaires,this paper investigates 12 teachers in 6 cities of Shandong Province and 38 students in Grade 2 and Grade 3 of a senior high school in Feicheng.It investigates teachers’ teaching and students’ learning in order to to find out why teachers’ teaching causes difficulties in understanding new definitions and students’ learning causes difficulties in understanding new definitions.This paper makes use of questionnaire to analyze students’ learning process and find out the main difficulties that make it difficult for them to understand new definitions: they can not correctly and comprehensively understand the concepts or operations of the new definitions given in the title,which is the key reason for students’ difficulty in understanding;they can not use appropriate mathematical relations according to the new definitions or operational symbols given which is the biggest reason why students have difficulty in understanding;they can not extract the basic knowledge correctly through the new definitions or operations given in the title;and they can not choose the correct ideas and methods through the new definitions or operations given in the title.In view of the above reasons and the data of the questionnaire,this paper analyzes the students’ learning process,and finds out the reasons for the students’ difficulty in understanding the new definition problems.The students are unskillful to transform the literal language,symbolic language and graphic language;neglecting the summary of mathematical thinking methods that is helpful to understand the new definitions;the lack of strict logical reasoning ability;the poor mastery of the learned knowledge related with the new definition well;the insensitivity to the newIV information in the new definition problem;the new information in the new definition tends to make students nervous;too little experience bout understanding the new definition.By using questionnaire,this paper analyzes the teaching process of teachers and finds out the reasons why students have difficulty in understanding the new definition problem.The teacher is not paying much attention to the new definition problem.The teacher has less explanation on the new definition.The teacher’s guidance on the new definition problem is simplex;the teacher has less demand for the students when meeting the new definition questions;the explanation of the new definition problem is not systematic enough to help the students to establish a systematic pattern or method to understand the new definition problems.Teaching suggestions for teachers: For the new definition problems,pay attention to train the students using literal language,symbolic language and graphic language to describe the new definition problems;while explaining the new definition problems,supply multiple methods to understand the new definitions and help the students to summarize the thinking methods to improve students’ understanding ability of new definition problems;as for understanding the new definition problems,give strict demand to the students to improve the students’ understanding of the new definition problems;in the normal teaching work,teachers should timely explaining,timely evaluation,timely feedback and help students to summarize and organize,so as to promote students’ understanding of new definition problems;in the normal teaching work,teachers should attach importance to the new definition problems so as to improve the students’ ability to understand the new definition problems so that students can overcome the tension of new definitions,and then improve students’ understanding ability of new definition problems.Suggestions for students’ learning: In the ordinary learning process,students should pay attention to the transformation training of literal language,symbolic language and graphic language to promote students’ understanding of the new definition;in the ordinary learning process,students should pay attention to summarize,organize and reflect on the way of thinking to understand,so as topromote students’ understanding of the newly defined problems;in the ordinary learning process,students should pay attention to improve the logical thinking ability in order to promote understanding of the issue of the new definition;in the ordinary learning process,students should firmly grasp the knowledge and set up a systematic knowledge networks to promote students’ understanding of the new definition problem;in the ordinary learning process,students should consciously increase the exercise quantity of the new definition problem and promote the understanding of the new definition problem;in the ordinary learning process,students should do more psychological hints to overcome students’ tension in the face of new definition problems,so as to improve students’ understanding of new definition problems.
