| Introduction to plane geometry is an important step to guide freshmen to adapt to the learning of plane geometry in junior high school. In the initial stage of learning geometry,a large number of geometric languages and figures have appeared, and these languages and concepts are required to be expressed with geometric figures and literal symbols in order to be correctly described and understood, which brings about many difficulties to students.Learning geometry requires precise and reasonable thinking. It is obviously difficult for grade seven students who just get to geometry. As a teacher, how to guide and help students do well in this first step is particularly crucial. In this research,207 grade seven students from 5 classes in 2 schools were studied. The quantitative study was conducted through questionnaires and test questions, and qualitative one was carried out through individual interviews.By literature analysis, questionnaire survey, interview and other methods, the problems and difficulties in introduction to geometry for grade seven students are discussed.Based on the review of literature both at home and abroad, the reasons for the difficulties are analyzed from subjectivity and objectivity.Subjective factors lies in personal factors such as learning motivation, learning interest and learning habits. Objective factors include ability of recognizing pictures, concept understanding, language expression, reasoning and argumentation.According to the examination in this initial stage, the geometric problems are analyzed from two perspectives:knowledge type and thinking level. Moreover statistical tools like SPSS are used to analyze the students’ answers. On one hand,it is expected to see the overall situation of students’ mastery of the corresponding knowledge points so as to find out which knowledge point students have difficulty mastering. On the other hand, the study expects to explore the levels and specific performance of students’ ability in picture recognizing, concept understanding, language expression as well as reasoning and argumentation. Finally, the corresponding teaching suggestions are discussed through literature analysis and data analysis.Teaching suggestions are mainly from the aspects of cultivating students’ interest in geometry and improving their ability in picture recognizing, concept understanding, language expression as well as reasoning and argumentation.Based on data processing as well as interviews and literature analysis, conclusions are drawn as follows:1.In terms of intellectual factors, the levels of learning difficulty from low to high in the step of introduction to geometry are respectively picture recognizing, language expression, reasoning and argumentation as well as conceptual understanding in which conceptual understanding is the most important factor causing geometric learning difficulty.2.In terms of non intellectual factors, learning motivation, learning interest and learning habit have a significant impact on geometric learning, among which learning interest is significantly related to conceptual understanding.3.In terms of gender difference, due to lack of good learning habits in the initial step of learning geometry, boys stay on the surface of geometric concept understanding even with higher learning interest, resulting in the lower level of overall geometric mastering than that of girls.Through this study,it can not only help students to better grasp the learning of the introduction to plane geometry, but also provide reference for the front-line teachers in their teaching, thus it is of great practical value. |
