Research On The Current Situation And Problems Of Classroom Teaching Language In Schools For The Deaf

The specialty of students in the deaf school determines the importance of proper teaching language in those schools.There still exists typical problems practicing teaching language in deaf schools in China.In this paper,the author watched 18 public teaching videos of a deaf school in Shanxi Province,Shanxi Province and used the time recording method,the gesture vocabulary recording method and the frequency recording method to observe the use of teaching language in deaf schools.In addition,the author interviewed 9 teachers and 9 deaf students respectively.With analysis of the observed results and interview records,the author showed a picture of the current status and issues of teaching language in use.The author also conducted a cause analysis to explore more suitable teaching language forms for deaf students.Research Findings:First,the combination of speaking and sign language(Signed Chinese)is the dominant form of teaching language in the deaf school.The proportion of single use of speaking or sign language is not high in classroom teaching for deaf students,especially the single use of sign language.Second,signed Chinese is the primary form of sign language while natural sign language plays a supporting role in the classroom teaching of deaf schools.Third,there are mainly five types of problems practicing signed Chinese by deaf school teachers: using finger letters instead of gestures,using similar gestures to replace the words to be expressed,translation missing,using gestures to piece up words and non standard gestures being used.Through analysis,the main causes of problems are as follows.First,there is a deviation in understanding of deaf Chinese acquisition.Second,there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of natural sign language and signed Chinese.Third,the positive effect of deaf teachers on classroom teaching in deaf school is neglected.Forth,sign language ability of teachers for the deaf is limited.Five,there is no attention to be paid on individual differences of deaf students.Based on findings above,the author made suggestions to improve the use of teaching language in deaf schools in China.First,change the traditional teaching idea;second,clarify the linguistic position of natural sign language;third,increase the proportion of deaf teachers;forth,improve the sign language ability of teachers for the deaf;fifth,correctly handle the relationship between speaking and sigh language;sixth,conform to the laws of deaf language acquisition.
