After the Second World War,Japan opened a new diplomatic situation with Southeast Asian countries with its compensation diplomacy as a breakthrough. This also became an important step for Japan to re-enter the international arena after the war.As the most important country in Southeast Asia at that time,Indonesia has become the first difficulty for Japan to develop the relationship with the Southeast Asian countries.Indonesia and Japan are highly complementary countries. With the development of the Japanese economy,Indonesia's strategic geographical position and important resource supplier status have become increasingly prominent. How to provide assistance to Indonesia has become an important issue in the Japanese Congress. In the stage of the compensation negotiations from 1951 to 1958,Japan's aid policy for Indonesia was basically formed. After the transition in the 1960 s and the development in the 1970 s and 1980 s,it reached its peak in the late 1980 s and 1998.Japan's assistance to Indonesia has always been guided by sustainability and emphasis on people's livelihood. After entering the 21 st century,it has penetrated into Indonesia's political, economic, cultural, and life fields.Japan's various aid projects not only laid the foundation for Indonesia's future economic development, but also rallied the hearts of the people and reversed the national image of Japan in Indonesia after the war.Even though Japan's economic assistance has begun to shrink since the 21 st century, the economic exchanges between Japan and Indonesia remain unabated, and Indonesia's domestic evaluation of Japan's public opinion has further developed after a fundamental change. However, although Japan's aid has played an important role in promoting Indonesia's development, the aid policy as part of Japan's diplomatic strategic vision is fundamentally aimed at ensuring Japan's own development which is for self-interest.
