In the 1950 s and 1960 s,Adam Schaff presented the problem of "human" which has been neglected by people in Marxism.By criticizing existentialism and explaining the theory of alienation,he put forward that the essence of Marxism is a kind of humanitarianism. On this basis,Schaff formed a socialist thought characterized by humanitarianism.Based on the research path of the history of philosophical thought, this paper systematically expounds Schaff’s socialist thought by using the method of integrating history with logic from the historical background and theoretical origin, philosophical basis, ideological connotation and humanitarian characteristics of Schaff’s socialist thought.Socialism should take man as its starting point and ultimate goal, humanitarianism as its ultimate value and ideal, develop socialist economy in an all-round way, realize high-level democracy, build a new socialist culture and train new socialist people.Although Schaff’s socialist thought has certain limitations of the times,it provides important theoretical resources for us to think about what socialism is and how to build socialism. We can provide theoretical reference for our socialist construction in the new era by drawing on the positive elements.
