After Singapore was opened as a free port in the 19 th century,rubber planting industry flourished and attracted a large number of immigrants.English is the administrative language of the colonists,Malay is the native language of Singapore,Chinese is brought by the Chinese immigrants and the languages of other countries in the world,which together constitute the unique multilingual environment of Singapore in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China.Overseas Chinese,as an important part of Singapore society,promote the creation and development of Singapore’s Chinese newspaper industry.As Singapore’s first Chinese daily published in 1881,LAK daily recorded all aspects of Singapore’s society at that time and became a valuable material for studying Singapore’s Chinese at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.This paper takes the transliteration of Loanwords in the Chinese language newspaper of Singapore at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China as the research object,in order to reveal some characteristics of the Chinese language of Singapore at the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China.The full text is divided into four chapters.The first chapter divides the transliteration loanwords into English,Japanese,Malay,Russian,French,German,Sanskrit,Latin,Arabic,Spanish,Vietnamese,Danish,Portuguese,Romanian,Thai,Persian,Filipino,Javanese,Turkic,Mongolian,Jurchen,Cantonese,Manchu,etc These 23 source languages;secondly,from the perspective of borrowing method,the transliteration loanwords in lat newspaper are divided into four types: pure transliteration loanwords,generic transliteration loanwords,homonymy translation loanwords and halftone and half meaning loanwords;finally,from the perspective of word meaning category,the transliteration loanwords in lat newspaper are divided into four types: place name,thing,appellation and abstract.In the second and third chapters,we compare the use of transliterated loanwords in Singapore and other local newspapers in China,and find that the use of transliterated loanwords is universal in Singapore’s Chinese newspapers in the same period,which is a lexical feature of Singapore’s Chinese newspapers at that time.The formation of this feature is also affected by the vocabulary of local newspapers in China in the same period.With the development of the times,many of the translated loanwords in LAK newspaper have been used in modern Singapore Chinese newspapers,even in the vocabulary system of modern Chinese standard language,while some of the translated loanwords in LAK newspaper have disappeared in the long history.The fourth chapter analyzes the factors that influence the formation of Singapore’s transliteration of Loanwords in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China,including the social and historical development of Singapore and the language contact.The language contact is mainly English,Malay and Russian.The factors that influence the diachronic evolution of Singapore’s transliteration of Loanwords in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic of China are Singapore’s social politics,economy,language policy and society Changes in life,etc.
