Bartok is one of the most important composers of the 20 th century, and his symphonic poem <Kossuth>,composed during his last year at the Royal Hungarian Academy of Music,is his first piece to combine late romantic style with Hungarian elements. The success of <Kossuth> gave Bartok a great reputation at Budapest, despite the success of Kossuth,it didn't represent the style of his more mature work. This symphonic poem is considered Bartok's first attempt at integrating serious music and Hungarian elements. The first chapter of this paper will introduce the life and representative works of Bartok and the background of <Kossuth>.This overview will help us to understand the piece better. The second chapter will introduce the orchestration of <Kossuth>,combined with the late romantic orchestration style. The third, fourth and fifth chapters are the most important sections of this paper. In the third chapter,we will distinguish two themes in <Kossuth>,'expositive' and‘developmental',and discuss the lengthways structure of timbre.Based on the third chapter, the fourth chapter will discuss the rhythmic variations of timbral structure. In this part,we will analyze the piece from a horizontal and dynamic perspective. In the fifth chapter we will discuss timbral tension. The sixth chapter will be a summary discussion of the previous chapters.
