Reading is the key way for us to learn knowledge and understand information,and it is also an important way for us to improve our language ability.Because the native language of our country is Chinese rather than English,so teenagers lack a good English environment in the process of learning English,reading English materials has become an important bridge for primary and middle school students in China to understand English and the wider world environment.English reading is not only a simple language skill,but also an important learning channel,which opens up the language barrier between us and the wider world knowledge field,and is also an important bridge to learn more knowledge and skills.English Reading for the Improvement of Foreign Language Ability and Improving personal quality in many ways plays an important role.Due to the limited teaching time in reading class,extra-curricular reading in language learning highlights its importance and necessity.Junior middle school is an important stage for teenagers to develop their reading habits.In order to fully understand the English extracurricular reading situation of junior middle school students in our country,and then cultivate the English level and reading ability of middle school students efficiently.Based on the theory of learning motivation and the theory of autonomous learning,this paper makes full reference to the research results of scholars at home and abroad.Through the method of questionnaire and face-to-face interview,669 students,669 parents and 6 English teachers in the junior middle school of Longwen Experimental School in Yibin carried out a survey on the current situation of English extracurricular reading for junior high school students.The main contents of the survey include the attitude of 669 junior high school students towards English extracurricular reading,the motivation of English extracurricular reading,the English extracurricular reading materials and reading volume,extracurricular reading strategies and reading habits,reading effects and reading obstacles,and teachers 'guidance on extracurricular reading Ways and levels of participation,parents 'guidance and levels of extracurricular reading,trying to understand the current situation of junior middle school students' extracurricular English reading and the problems in it,and exploring how to improve and promote students 'extracurricular reading in English.The research found that :(1)the present situation of the students' English extracurricular reading in this school is not optimistic.Although students can agree with the positive effect of English extracurricular reading on improving English proficiency,due to the heavy burden of homework,English extracurricular reading in junior high school students is generally over utilitarian,too short reading time,lack of reading strategies,poor reading habits,lack of planning and reflection.(2)Although teachers have a positive attitude towards extracurricular reading,due to the high teaching pressure and inadequate experience in guiding extracurricular reading,their guidance to students is mainly to recommend extracurricular readings,among which the teachers in the first and second grades are better.Therefore,students are more motivated.However,as teachers all mentioned the lack of supervision,feedback and inspection of extracurricular reading,the effect of extracurricular reading was generally not very optimistic.(3)Although parents support their children's extracurricular reading in English,students' extracurricular reading has not been implemented due to the lack of relevant English knowledge and the lack of supervision.In general,parents and teachers have already recognized the importance of English extracurricular reading,and expressed support for the English extracurricular reading of middle school students.At present,the main problems existing in extracurricular English reading of middle school students in China include lack of interest in reading,insufficient support of external conditions,insufficient reserve of English language and culture knowledge of middle school students,and the lack of good English reading habits and of external factors.According to the age stage and physical and mental characteristics of junior high school students,it is proposed to stimulate the interest of junior high school students in reading,to promote the combination of family reading and subject reading,and to improve the support for English extracurricular reading in schools To strengthen and actively carry out English extracurricular reading activities,strengthen teachers' guidance to students' English extracurricular reading and strengthen relevant theoretical research,so as to improve the social attention to English extracurricular reading.This study can provide reference basis for English teachers in the investigated schools to improve their English extracurricular reading guidance,help students improve their English extracurricular reading ability,and at the same time have reference significance for future research on English extracurricular reading.
