Grammar is an important part of language knowledge.Mastering grammar can promote the development of students’ listening,speaking,reading and writing.The English curriculum standard for compulsory education(2011)aims to cultivate students’ comprehensive language application ability.It emphasizes to create good language situation for English learners,providing students with a large number of language practice and exercise opportunities,and let students learn language by means of perception,practice,experience,participation and communication.However,in the current grammar teaching of junior high school in China,most teachers often use the traditional teaching method to teach grammar,which is embodied in that teachers explain grammar rules,while students passively accept them in the classroom.With the continuous development of the new curriculum reform,the ability to use the language is very important for students.The communicative teaching method emphasizes that language knowledge can be better used in the actual communication.In this study,90 students from two parallel classes in a middle school in Shandong Province are taken as the research subjects.From the perspective of empirical research,the purpose of this study is to solve the following there problems:(1)What is the overall effect of communicative teaching method on junior high school students’ mastery of English modal verbs?(2)What is the effect of communicative teaching method on the mastery of English modal verbs by junior high school students at different levels?(3)What is the attitude of junior high school students at different levels towards the teaching of English modal verbs with communicative teaching method?The teaching experiment lasted for 3 months,using experimental method and interview method as the main research method.Before the experiment,the experimental class and the control class were tested to understand the students’ mastery of modal verbs.According to the test results,the experimental class students were divided into three levels,high,medium and low.After the experiment,the students were tested again to compare the changes of the pre-test and post-test scores.After the experiment,six students of different levels in the experimental class were interviewed to understand the influence of communicative teaching method on the mastery of English modals verbs of junior high school students at different levels,and the attitude of junior high school students at different levels towards teaching Englishmodals verbs using communicative teaching method.SPSS 23.0 software was used to analyze the data collected in the experiment.It is found that the scores of the two classes have been improved after the experiment,but from the change of the mean value,it can be seen that the performance of the experimental class has been improved more obviously,which shows that the communicative teaching method is conducive to the mastery of modal verbs for junior high school students as a whole.For the students of different level groups in the experimental class,the scores of the students in the high and middle level groups have been significantly improved,while the scores of the students in the low level group have not been significantly improved,which shows that the communicative teaching method is helpful for the students in the high and middle level groups to master the modal verbs,while for the students in the low level group,the effect is not obvious.In terms of the attitude of junior high school students at different levels towards the teaching of English modal verbs,they all think that communicative teaching method is helpful to the mastery of English modal verbs.The low-level group students’ participation in the classroom is not high because of their poor foundation.The author draws the following enlightenment,teachers should deal with the relationship between communicative teaching method and traditional teaching method,the relationship between teachers and students in teaching,at the same time,teachers need to have strong professional quality and broad knowledge.
