This paper starts its elaborations on the acceptance and spreading process of Stele of Cao Quan in Qing dynasty, hoping to reveal the similarities and differences in the acceptance of Stele of Cao Quan from different calligraphers at different times and explore the reasons behind it.From the prefaces and postscripts of calligraphers and scholars, this paper summarizes the aesthetic idea that people received from Stele of Cao Quan, clarifies its development process in the calligraphy history of Qing dynasty, and demonstrates its acceptant history as well as effect history in Qing dynasty.Early Qing dynasty acted as a popular period during which Stele of Cao Quan enjoyed great popularity.Taking such calligraphers as Zheng fu,Zhu Yizun and Wan Jing as its representatives, this paper reveals the process of being considered as a model for the steles of Han dynasty that Stele of Cao Quan had experienced among calligraphers. The middle term of Qing dynasty was a prosperous period for Han Dynasty Steles, during which,Stele of Cao Quan developed as one of the works in a pluralistic pattern.Based on the calligraphy theories of such calligraphers as Wang Shu and Bao Shichen, this paper reveals the specific reasons for the change in situation of Stele of Cao Quan.Besides, taking some calligraphers such as Gao Fenghan and Gui Fu,etc.as example, this paper also summarizes people’s different degrees in the acceptance of Stele of Cao Quan as well as the differences of different calligraphers in the early Qing dynasty from the perspective of copying.During the late Qing dynasty,Stele of Cao Quan was being marginalized, and under the trend of the aesthetic style which was featured with grandeur and wonder, the lovely Stele of Cao Quan lost its popular position at times. The acceptance of Stele of Cao Quan showed two different tendencies. One is those calligraphers who kept the original style of the stele and thus they were looked upon, like Yao Yuanzhi, while the other one is the calligraphers who tried to be innovative, such as Zhang Tingji,Wu Chang Shuo, etc.Despite the fact that the copying and commenting practice for Stele of Cao Quan has been left out,its position as the model for Han Dynasty Steles will always exist.
