Standard Script Of Tang Dynasty In Qing Dynasty:a Bridge From Model Calligraphy Study To Stele Calligraphy Study

Divided into three parts, this dissertation aims at evaluating the role as a bridge of standard script in Tang dynasty in the change in Qing dynasty calligraphy, with its focus shifting from model study to Stele study. The first part is Building the Bridge. In this part, I will investigate what caused model study to decline in Qing dynasty, why and how Tang standard script stepped in and the effects of the intervention. I will also discuss the function of Tang standard script in the founding of Stele study by Ruan Yuan. The second part is Accessing the Bridge. In this part, by quoting Bao Shichen’s inspection on stele techniques in the perspective of Tang standard script, I will demonstrate the contribution of Tang standard script in Bao’s improvements on the initial Stele study theory, which had led to its future development. In the last part, Burning the Bridge, In the last part "Burning the Bridge", I will discuss the decline of Tang Standard Script and its causes, then elaborate how the stele study had come to flood tide.At the beginning of the qing dynasty, model study had gradually decline. Tang standard script pulled the model study from the weak mire, and lead it to Stele Study. Tang standard script lis derived from the inscriptions of North dynasty, and it has the calligraphy meaning of Zhuanshu ang Lishu,which is an important basis for Ruan Yuan to build the Stele study theory.Taking Tang standard script as a bridge, BaoShiChen has made the developing exploration to the technique of Weibei.Under Tang standard script bridge role, Bei Xue grows strong unceasingly, gradually becomes the strong trend by the weak trend.Due to the popularity of Tang standard script, and under influence of imperial civil service examination,changed to Guangeti, The people have formed aesthetic weary and reverse psychology to it.In the activity of looking for stele carving, Jinshi textual criticism makes the aesthetic comparison after Tang standard script and Weibei,they gradually accepted the ugly clumsy powerful beauty of Weibei. As the popularity of raw xuan paper and long goat’s hair writing brush, Tang Kai creation effect become very bad.Therefore, Tang standard script gradually decrease. In the late Qing dynasty, Kang Youwei out of the goal of politics, has launched the fierce and extreme attack to Tang standard script, finally has established the complete Stele study theoretical system, making the Stele study movement move toward the high tide.Tang standard script——a bridge between model study and Stele study had eventually removed.By the structure, through and removed of the bridge——Tang standard script, Calligraphy in the qing dynasty realized the transformation from model study to Stele study, and established the system of Stele theory system, the history of the qing dynasty calligraphy scroll is one by one.In my dissertation, I will reveal Tang standard script’s role as a bridge between the shifting focus from model study to stele study in Qing dynasty. Evolution of Calligraphy in Qing dynasty can be interpreted as the progress of building the bridge, accessing the bridge and burning down the bridge. By comparing these two relatively vague concepts, I will clarify model study and stele study so as to expound the relation between Tang standard script and each of them separately. By digging deep into the ideologies of stele theorists, namely, Ruan Yuan, Bao Shichen, Kang Youwei etc, this dissertation offers new perspectives in understanding the role of Tang Standard script as a connection in the history of calligraphy, especially in terms of calligraphy genres, calligraphy styles and calligraphy techniques, offering reference and guidance in the study of development patterns of calligraphy in Qing dynasty.
