Vocabulary is an important component in English language learning and essential for communication. Therefore,in teaching English,it is of great importance to pay special attention to the teaching of English vocabulary for the purpose of making a solid language foundation for students so as to improve their language competence. In recent years, there has been an increase in the use of rhymes to teach English and research on this aspect with a focus on students’ cognitive features in language learning. However, little has been done with primary school students as participants and few achievements have been made in the area of teaching vocabulary. As such, with reference to the previous researches, this study explores the influence of using rhymes on primary school students in terms of their learning and acquisition of English vocabulary. The participants of this study are 100third-grade pupils from a primary school in Jilin province. The study lasted one semester. Both experiment and questionnaire are used.In the process of experiment, one class a week,10 minutes of each class period is used for teaching vocabulary.Instant quizzes and delay tests are offered to examine rhyme’s impacts on helping students vocabulary learning.Data are collected and analyzed, guided by the following three questions:(1)What is the effect of the method in students’ acquisition of English vocabulary?(2)What impacts does the use of rhymes to teach vocabulary have on primary school students’ interest of English vocabulary learning? The major findings show that:(1)The use of this method can help primary school students improve their learning of English words. The rhythmic features of word rhymes can form vivid images in the minds and enhance students’ involvement in learning, which can help to improve their understanding and memorization of English words. The results of vocabulary test in the experimental class are significantly higher than those in the control class.(2)This method can stimulate students’ interest in learning.Eighty percent of students can realize the importance of English vocabulary learning. And sixty-five percent of students think that they are motivated to learn vocabulary.Seventy percent of the students are able to participate actively in classroom activities, and the effect of classroom interaction is improved. This study also indicates that in compiling and selecting rhymes to teach English words, special attention should be paid to the connection and integration of interest for inspiration with word connotation. It is necessary to consider the phonetic and semantic characteristics of a particular word to make a rhythmic connection that is convenient to understand and remember. When using formula to teach new words, students’ cognitive characteristics and memory level should be considered together with specific phonetic and content features in English knowledge to give full play to the role of oral formula as a medium to assist vocabulary learning. It provides learning support for students’ language input and output so as to optimize the effect of vocabulary learning process.
