Since the end of the Qing Dynasty,after the abolition of the imperial examination and the decline of the national ideological status of Confucianism,the issue of "reading classics" has become a "problem",especially "whether primary and secondary school students should read the classics" and "how to read the classics" has attracted people's attention and hot discussion.There have been many studies in the academic circles,focusing on the discussion of the right and wrong between the pro and anti schools,but few on the eclecticism in the process of collision and confrontation between the two schools.As a eclectic group that really exists in the field of history,the elucidation of its position and thought will help us to have a better view of the ideological confrontation over a hundred years,and also become an important basis for our return to the scene of history.In the debate of "Reading Classics in primary and secondary schools",the eclectic attitude of the eclectic school is consistent.In different periods of time,with the different context of the times,it presents a unique face.Since the end of the Qing Dynasty,as an important period of intense criticism of Confucian tradition and the rise and fall of the course of reading classics,the debate on reading classics has turned to the confrontation between the thoughts of "retro" and "anti retro".Since the announcement of "abolishing all primary school classics" in 1912,intellectuals and politicians have first debated this issue in the highlands of their knowledge,power and spiritual belief,and also discussed how to deal with "Confucius Confucianism" and "traditional culture".At this time,the individual who holds a compromise view on "reading classics in primary and secondary schools" can not form a school of their own.Various views are scattered in relevant newspapers and magazines.In 1920 s,especially in 1925,Zhang Shizhao advocated "Reading Classics in primary and secondary schools" as an important node,which pushed this issue to the climax of controversy again.Under the impact of "Western civilization bankruptcy theory",the controversy in this period has undergone new changes.The discussion of the eclecticists mainly focuses on the curriculum of reading classics and how to deal with the tension between Chinese and Western civilization.They hold that the curriculum of reading classics has no basis,and they oppose the instrumental use of traditional culture centered on Confucius Confucianism by those in power,and they hold that the appropriate content should be selected according to the level of primary and secondary school students,and the corresponding education shouldbe provided;By the 1930 s,the debate was becoming more rational and peaceful.The eclectic school,with the publication of The education magazine as the media,reflected the main idea of "selective reading" from the edge to the center of discourse in the aspects of the object level,the content choice,the way and method of reading and the revaluation of the value of reading.It is worth noting that after the outbreak of the all-round Anti Japanese War,the issue of "reading classics" has been put on hold.However,the eclectic scholars have maintained the rational spirit in the face of the dual consideration of the times and nationality of cultural choice,and the scholars who opposed the opinion of "Reading Classics in primary and secondary schools" have also moved towards the eclectic cultural choice in this period.In the first half of the 20 th century,the fact that the eclectic trend of thought gradually moved from the edge to the center shows that the "problem of reading classics in primary and secondary schools",as a cultural phenomenon,it needs to be solved by the logic of education and cultural development in line with the nationality and the times.Any extreme affirmative or negative attitude is not conducive to the judgment and deepening of individual cognition,the progress and reflection of the times,and more importantly useless of solving the problem.The eclectic cultural choice seeks the necessary balance between the new and the old,the Chinese and the Western cultural evolution in the process of "Enlightenment" and "salvation".On this level,the "selective reading of classics" embodied in it is of great significance.
