Expression has always been an important form of expression in painting, and as one of the modern artistic trends, expressionism first appeared in Germany at the beginning of the 20 th century, and then influenced the entire European continent and the world. These works are full of rich expressiveness and at the same time have deeply influenced the development of Chinese contemporary art, which makes me think about how the expressive tradition is presented in the picture and how it has influenced the spirit of the picture.I have targeted Northern Renaissance painting and modern painting, identifying and illustrating the expressive traditions within them by comparing the artists represented in both periods and their works. The main body of the article is divided into three parts, the first part is mainly the expressive tradition in the Northern Renaissance;the second part is the embodiment of the expressive tradition in modern painting;the third part is the inspiration of the representational tradition for the development of painting.
