Regional historical geography is an important part of historical geography, and the construction of the whole Chinese historical geography is inseparable from the research and development of regional historical geography. In the study of regional historical geography,Nanyang Basin is taken as the object of investigation because of its unique characteristics. The development trend of Nanyang Basin in the historical period has changed tremendously. It was a famous capital in Qin and Han Dynasties and an emperor’s village in Eastern Han Dynasty. However, after the Han Dynasty,Nanyang’s development tended to be twists and turns, and its decline in most periods were obvious. This paper takes this as the starting point, discusses the spatial and temporal differences of regional development, the evolution of administrative divisions, the development and change of central cities in Nanyang Basin, and the development trend of Nanyang Basin in historical period. It also analyses the important factors affecting the development of Nanyang Basin, and provides suggestions for the development of modern Nanyang City and region.Specifically,in addition to the introduction, this paper is divided into four chapters, the overall time as a clue. The article begins with the introduction, which mainly elaborates the significance of this topic, the current research situation and the introduction of related research results, defines the scope of the research area, and explains the research methods used in this paper. The first chapter briefly describes the development of natural and human geographical environment in Nanyang Basin, which includes the geographical location, topography, basin climate and climate changes in historical period,as well as the general situation of rivers, soil, animals and plants, mineral resources;the human geographical environment mainly includes the distribution and cultural evolution of archaeological and cultural areas in the pre-Qin period, and the evolution of custom areas since the Qin and Han Dynasties.Through the analysis of various geographical elements,it is found that Nanyang Basin is transitional in both natural and human geography. The second chapter focuses on the spatial and temporal differences of regional development and the internal structure of Nanyang Basin. It mainly discusses the development and distribution of agriculture, farmland water conserv ancy and population in each period, and finds that they are positively correlated with the economic development of Nanyang Basin.Through the evolution of administrative divisions of the basin and the changes of central cities, reflecting the historical status and socio-economic changes in different periods of the basin,as well as the changes of key areas of economic development,it is found that the overall trend of development in Nanyang historical period is wavy, with the highest point being the Han Dynasty and the lowest point being the Yuan Dynasty. The Yu River Basin has always been the most developed area of economic development within the region, inside Yu River basin, the centre of economic gravity has experienced from the upstream to the middle and lower reaches of a river basin and then turn back to a hierarchical development, the Bi River area and Tuan River area are also better developed areas in this area. The three chapter focuses on the impact of external location changes on the development of Nanyang Basin, and finds that whether it is located in the "frontier" is an important factor, and that "frontier" is related to national political security. The period of "frontier" is the period of basin development, while the period of inland is declining.During the three generations and the Xia,Shang and Zhou dynasties, the location of the opposite border between Yi and Xia prompted the northern and southern forces to focus on competing for Nanyang Basin and vigorously manage it.Especially in the Zhou dynasty,Nanyang was fighting against Jingman Huaiyi, guarding the frontier of Nantu, maintaining the stability of Jindaoxi line, and the separation of Nanyang Dahang in the Zhou Dynasty was the beginning of the rapid development of Nanyang. In the Spring and Autumn Period,Nanyang was located in the Southern of the Eastern Zhou Dynasty. It was the important place for Chu to go up to the Central Plains. The State of Chu sent troops to Shenlu and set up counties in Nanyang to govern and train the army.During the Warring States Period,Han,Qin and Chu fought for Nanyang. The important military and political status made Nanyang a famous capital.During the Qin Dynasty, the contradictions between the East and the West remained, and the old aristocratic forces left the six kingdoms in Guandong unstable. In the Western Han Dynasty, there were two homogeneous zones in the kingdom of princes and the prefecture of Han Dynasty. The political status of Nanyang benefited greatly from the division of Qin and the six kingdoms, the communication between the prefecture of Western Han Dynasty and the kingdom of princes, and a series of harnessing of basins by Qin and Western Han Dynasty, which made the basin powerful Landlords and clans grew stronger in Nanyang, and eventually Nanyang hero help Liu Xiu established the Eastern Han Dynasty.Nanyang reached its peak in the early Eastern Han Dynasty, but its military status declined due to its inland location near the national political center, and began to decline after the middle of the Eastern Han Dynasty. After the Eastern Han Dynasty and even in modern times,Nanyang was in the inland position of dynasty domination for most of the time, and its political status was not important, which aggravated the trend of economic decline. In the fourth chapter, the internal and external factors affecting the development of Nanyang Basin are briefly discussed.Suitable climate, convenient transportation, terrain between mountains and rivers, population change and water resources development and utilization are important internal factors for the development of Nanyang Basin.External factors are location changes.Nanyang Basin is more and more located in the inland area far from the capital. With the change of political pattern from East-West confrontation to North-South confrontation, the function and military status of Nanyang traffic channel has declined, which makes Nanyang Basin change from the central control center to the general area.At the same time,it puts forward suggestions for the development of contemporary Nanyang Basin, advocating the establishment of a leisure tourism city and becoming the "back garden" of Henan Province.
