This report aims study on intellectual property terms in the translation of the book Patent Inventions-Intellectual Property and the Victorian Novel,written by Professor Clare Pettitt from King’s College London.This book shows that the Victorian authors reflect the value of labor and patent as well as intellectual property and the manner of responsibility in their novels.Here Chapter Two is focused to discuss intellectual property like inventions,patent,copyright in the 1830 s and 1840 s and there are some valuable intellectual property terms in this chapter.This report describes the problems and difficulties in translation and makes analysis on them.According to the history and development of Chinese and English intellectual property systems under different legal systems,this report makes studies on the translation of intellectual property terms guided by Susan Sarcevic’s Functional Standards of legal term translation.Additionally,based on the interpretation of the terms and the contexts,finally the translations of intellectual property terms are decided.This report not only solves the translation problems and difficulties in Chapter Two but also contributes to the translation practice and studies of intellectual property terms in China.The strategies in this report may provide inspiration for the translation of intellectual property terms and the conclusions such as the translation of property,the translation of copyright,the comparison of property and ownership and the translations of‘creativity,inventiveness,originality’ may provide the reference to the translation of English intellectual property terms as well as the translation of Chinese intellectual terms.Furthermore,this report contributes to the translation practice of intellectual property terms in China and provide more accurate and appropriate expressions for strengthening the influence of Chinese Intellectual Property System in the world.
