Form the late 19th century to the early 20th century,Japan experienced the Meiji Restoration which required wholesale westernization and the reformation of modernization.With the cultural impact of this reformation,Western painting gained comprehensive attention while Nihonga was in the dilemma that nobody seemed bother.In this situation,a part of artists were vigilant and they made every effort to find a way out of this dilemma for the culture of their own country.One of the most representative artists was Yokoyama Taikan?1868-1958?,who was famous in the field of painting during Meiji era and Taisho era as well as Showa era.What's more,he had good reputation as tough fighter of New Nihonga,a distinguished figure of Nihonga in modern times,a famous artistic activist,a well-know educationist in Fine Art.In order to get New Nihonga modernization,Yokoyama Taikan resigned his position at Tokyo Fine Arts School then he started to work in Japan Art Institute which was established by Kakuzo Okakura.Although MEXT?Ministry of Education,Culture,Sports,Science and Technology?disagreed him fiercly,he insisted on continuing the business of Kakuzo Okakura's“New Japanese painting movement”and prospering Japan Art Institute.The abundant life experience and the experience working on arts contributed to Yokoyama Taikan's artistic thought and artistic style.“Mourou-tai?Blurred style?”and“Kata-bokasi?Unilateral gradation?”which were invented by him,have broken down the inherent form of traditional Japanese painting have established an important status in the art history in Japan for“New Nihonga”.The study of the modernization of Nihonga is a tremendous and difficult project.As a result,this article tries to research Nihonga by discussing the key objects under the framework of Nihonga in modern times.The basic idea of this article is to analyse and expound not only the formation and the content of New Japan painting Ideology but also the artistic innovation of New Nihonga through the research of Yokoyama Taikan‘s experiences on arts and his artistic style on paintings as well as the background in his period.According to a large amount of documents and the autoprical materials collected in Japan,the author unearths the artistic value of Yokoyama Taikan's New Nihonga,which provides the possibility as a reference for the culture extending of Chinese Traditional Paintings nowadays.
