Raymond Queneau, whose works cover various literary genres,is recognized as one of the major writers of his time.Despite his identity as a participant in surrealism and co-founder of the literary group Oulipo,he has not received sufficient attention,or he is only illustrated by his fantasy in puns.It was only until the appearance of his posthumous manuscripts that scholars turned to philosophy in his works. As for his novel,The Blue Flowers,as the apologue quoted in its fourth cover says, bears a certain Taoist color. In fact,Rene Etiemble,a famous sinologist, appreciated it as "the most beautiful, the most important of Taoist novels in France".Since in the early years,Taoist thoughts have become a trend in the West,we are going, starting from The Blue Flowers which is the object of our studies and through the methods of comparison,to analyze the correspondence and the difference between the ideas transmitted by the novel and Taoist thoughts,as well as the sources of this shift,to lead to a reflection on Sino-Western exchanges. Thus, our studies take place on the following three planes:the view of the language-the basic tool for the man to explore;the view of the world-the object to explore;and the view of the individual-the subject that explores. The main part of the thesis is divided into three parts:the function of the first part is to research the cynical and hard soul behind Queneau talented in language games and links between him and the Taoist thoughts. The second part is to find out the connection and difference between the ideas conveyed by The blue flowers and Taoist thoughts. In the third part, the sources of this discrepancy will be analyzed. Thus the discoveries can be listed as follows:First,we see in the novel the omnipresent brilliance of Taoist philosophy,as much concerning the infidelity of language,as concerning cosmic instability,or that the return to the primitive state being given human impotence. Then, behind this correspondence, there is a subtle shift.Quenien's doubt is born rather from the sceptism of human reason and bears a certain negative color. And compared to Taoist thoughts that are abstract,Quenian ideas seem more rational. Finally,if there is a gap,it is because Queneau is above all a French writer whose works must inevitably be imbued with Western philosophy and his private experiences form the characters in him.In fact,it is just this echo crossing the spatio-temporal gap and the lag behind the echo that deserve our reflection:the distinctions come from the soils that cultivate the two cultures;and the correspondences must be explained by reflection and joint research for all humanity.
