The Yungang Grottoes were excavated in 453 AD and completed in 525 AD.It was the first large-scale grotto construction project initiated by the state since Buddhism was introduced to China.It is an important material image of ancient Chinese history?Buddhist art?music?architecture,etc.Yungang Grottoes cover a wide range of contents and many problems need to be further studied.The study of Buddhist pagodas in Yungang Grottoes is one of them.Previous scholars mentioned the style and its characteristics of Yungang Buddhist Pagoda or the comparison between Yungang Pagoda and other pagodas in other areas on their research.So Conducting a comprehensive type and staging study and pointing the sculpture age,the characteristics of the times,the interrelation and the evolution law of various Buddhist pagodas on the Yungang Grottoes should be a very useful attempt.This article is to do some research on this topic.Using the method of archaeological typology,through field investigation,it is found that the Buddhist pagodas in Yungang Grottoes are divided into middle and late stages.The later Buddhist pagodas not only inherit the earlier ones,but also have their own unique innovations.It can be said that the pagodas of each period are independent and interrelated.At the same time,this paper also puts forward some opinions on the origin of various types of Buddhist pagodas in Yungang Grottoes and their influence on other Buddhist pagodas.
