Canadian novelist Alice Munro has attracted people's attention all over the world by her short stories. Her writing has developed under the influence of the novel's anti-traditional trend,as well as the rising tendency of Canadian regional novel creation. She tends to focus on the town's local conditions and practices, shows the relationship between people and space by space writing,in order to reveal the positive influence that changes of life have on people's growth and development.People all live in space,so their behaviors and mentality are both affected by space, which constitute a close interactive relationship as well.During the process of writing short stories,Munro paid attention to the interaction between characters and space, focused on physical space to show characters' spiritual growth and life changes. She revealed the richness and uncertainty of life from three perspectives which include natural space, family space and regional space,to show the impact of changes on characters.Natural space changes in a complex way, responding to the changing rhythm of life. The wilderness in the snow reveals that the truth of life needs to be explored and questioned.Rivers and marshes imply the uncertainty of life's direction and ending.Woods and caves symbolize the emergence of desire and the pursuit of self.Family space is full of contradictions.Home is the starting point of memory and the concentration of contradictions. The attic and basement which are both located in the vertical direction emphasize the necessity of growth and promotion, providing power for characters to transform and develop. The horse farm and fox-keeping farm adjacent to the outside world show the possibility of escape and resistance, which provide a breakthrough for the characters' self-pursuit.Regional space is unique and rich. The changes of the town indicate that changes are inevitable, and they have profound influence on the characters' psychology and life. The journey interweaves memory with reality, brings transformation of characters' emotion and life track.Nursing homes and therapy, which have healing function and constitute heterotopia of deviation in real life, present the characters' acceptance of changes, and their struggles to find self. The three spaces not only interweave together to form vast physical space, but also promote transformation of characters' cognitive, affect their choices of life path, and then reveal real life. When Munro shows changes of life by space, she tends to convey the purport of her writing at the same time. She encourages people to face and reply changes of life actively,to grow up,to seek self and happiness.
