The works of Alice Munro rooted in real life.The edge small towns, Western Ontario of Canada, are the backgrounds of the works.They are mainly about the ordinary people’s life, especially the women’s ordinary life,which hidden much tragedy.By telling the mundane and trivial daily life of characters in the small town,Munro plan to explore the theme of the complex life.In this thesis,I choose two works of Munro’s——"Lives of Girls and Women " " The Beggar Maid:Stories of Flo & Rose ".The two works are the series of stories,and they have a certain cohesion. "Lives of Girls and Women" mainly about a detailed description of the Dale’s childhood and high school period life." The Beggar Maid:Stories of Flo & Rose " mainly about a detailed description of Rose’s love and marriage life.So the two short sets can compose connected into a novel,which involving almost the hero’s whole life,so that we can reading and analysis easily.The thesis have five parts.The first part is the introduction,which analysis the works of Munro,the domestic and foreign research situation of Munro’s works presently and the research perspectives and ideas of this thesis. The second part,which mainly aims at Munro’s Town, analyzes the geographical features of the town,the social structure and religious faith.The third part mainly discusses the characters’ life of the small town. The fourth part mainly analyzes the identity problem of people.The fifth part is the conclusion.Based on Munro’s novels,I plan to analysis from three levels:the geographical characteristics of the town, the spiritual world of the characters and the characters’ identity in the town.Only in this way,can we understand the region, nationality and literature of Canada proundly.
