Research On Shanghai Book Chamber Of Commerce (1905-1930)

In December 1905,the Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce,which represents the interests of the so-called new-style booksellers,mainly printed paperbacks,was established.From 1905 to 1930,during the 25 years since its establishment,the Shanghai Book Chamber of Commerce has gradually established relatively complete rules and regulations,spared no effort in presiding over copyright protection,and insisted on safeguarding the rights and interests of the same industry,thus creating favorable conditions for the development of Shanghai Book Industry.First of all,this article will explain the overall situation of Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce.At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China,with the popularization of advanced printing technology and the prosperity of the new book market,the profits of book industry practitioners and industry increased rapidly,and the competition among the same profession became increasingly fierce,which led to the emergence of various speculative actions against the market order.It was urgent for the book industry to establish a special organization to coordinate disputes among the same profession and safeguard the interests of the same profession.In the same period,the Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce was established under the demonstration of the establishment of multi-industry organizations.From the beginning of its establishment to the end that the Shanghai Book Industry Association was reorganized with other book industry organizations,with the development of the time and the changes of laws and regulations formulated by the government,the Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce had undergone development and evolution.Secondly,this paper will explore the relatively complete rules and regulations formed by the Shanghai Book Chamber of Commerce in the course of its existence.In the process of self-exploration and government guidance,the Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce had gradually formed a membership system and a board system,an operational mechanism composed of the deliberation system and the electoral system,and a set of meticulous and transparent financial management mechanism with modern organizational characteristics,thus completing the transformation from traditional guild to modern industry organization,and at the sametime guaranteeing the authority and vitality of Book Industry Chamber of Commerce in the industry.Thirdly,this paper will fully describe the efforts of Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce to safeguard copyright and social welfare.Bookstore Chamber of Commerce took protecting the rights and interests of booksellers and copyright as its first purpose.It had a good performance in both domestic and foreign copyright protection.In addition,the Shanghai Book Chamber of Commerce had carried out a series of work in order to strive for freedom of publication and economic interests of the book industry.In this process,the Shanghai Book Industry Chamber of Commerce had effectively played the role of industry management and social functions,and promoted the development of the publishing industry.Finally,this paper will analyze the historical impact of the Shanghai Book Chamber of Commerce on the modern publishing industry in Shanghai.It will summarize from three aspects: enhancing the communication between enterprises and the government,safeguarding the interests of the same industry,and improving the environment of the book industry.Finally,it will evaluate the special status of the Shanghai Book Chamber of Commerce in the modern publishing history.
