A Study On The Phenomenon Of Sound Pauses In The Chinese-English Continuum

Interpreting,as a tool to transfer information,plays an important role in promoting communication and development among nations.In this thesis,the source material is the opening speech of the 2018 SCO Summit in Qingdao and the speech on the banquet of the SCO Summit in Qingdao.The filled pauses in the alternate interpretation are mainly as follows: filler,repeat,repair and voice lengthening.In this thesis,the author analyzes the causes of the occurrence by exemplifying the phenomenon of filled pauses in the practice of interpretation.The reasons are mainly as follows: unclear notes,improper language habits,confusing the words' meaning and spending too much time on the interpretation.From a deeper level of analysis,the reasons are lacking of language skills and poor psychological quality.Based on this,the author tries to propose strategies for the filled pause phenomenon and apply them to the author's second interpretation practice.The strategies are as follows: intensive training on notes,public speaking training,interpreting intensive training and adjusting the flow rate.It is hoped that the analysis of this practice will give reference and inspiration to more interpreters and learners.
