Study On Filled Pauses In Consecutive Interpretation

With the deepening of globalization,interpretation has become increasingly important and prosperous.During its development,there have been plenty of researches done on interpreting theories and practice.However,researches done on pauses in interpretation are quite rare.In interpretation,interpreters ought to reproduce what has been said in another language as accurately as possible.Therefore,the process of interpretation means that of SL decoding and the process of TL recoding as well.With an interpreting experiment as the supplementary study,the paper reported two small-scale experiments on filled pause during E-C CI and C-E CI.Three MTI students participated in the experiments,acting as research subjects.By recording the Cl practice of the student interpreters and collecting the corpus,the thesis aimed at investigating the rate,length and so on.After adjusting the starting points of the wave files in each experiment to be the same,they were transcribed through the software Adobe Audition,with time calibrated whenever pauses occur.Then,the author combines the experimental results with interpreters’experience,and concludes relative causes of the filled pause phenomenon.Dozens of examples are also given to illustrate how the above analysis has been carried out.Research shows the causes to make pause are verified:first and the most time-consuming one is the interpreter looking for notes;the second is that the interpreter needs to construct sentences in target language from the long-term memory and the third is mis-coordination between memory and note-taking.By examining the recordings,main causes of pauses in consecutive interpretation could be found.Based on this,further studies could be carried out to help the interpreters’ practice and thus enhance the quality of interpretation.To summarize,interpreters should lay due emphasis on daily exercise,and gradually develop his own system of note-taking.Moreover,regular practice and bilingual speech skill should be promoted while doing interpreting practice,Interpreters should also adopt multiple approaches to reduce his improper pauses in this process.
