Tertiary students come from different backgrounds, with diverse dance experiences. One can expect that the students may have different meanings of creative thinking. One can therefore also expect that the students will have diverse expectations of studying dance in the university. This research asks, what are four first-year tertiary dance students’ meanings of studying creative dance at the University of Auckland in New Zealand and at Beijing Dance Academy in China. This study seeks to understand the meanings of creative thinking in dance in the context of the two countries by examining life experiences, reflections, and issues of four first-year tertiary dance students at the University of Auckland and Beijing Dance Academy. The study also recognises my voice as the researcher and therefore phenomenology and constructivism provide the theoretical framework for this thesis.
