Border Town by Shen Congwen is one of the masterpieces of Chinese literature in the 20th century,and is typically a novel with a poetic style.Over more than eighty years after it was published,it attracted numerous readers and researchers.At the beginning of the 21st century,all the versions of the language teaching material selected excerpts from the novel;the task of reading the whole book was also assigned to the students as extra-curricular reading;and additionally it was included in the list of masterpieces in college entrance exam of Jiangsu liberal arts.However,the genre teaching of traditional novels weakened the unique poetic style of Border Town.It has stories,but there is no coherent plot.It has characters,but the characters have no obvious features.The author tells stories and shapes characters mainly to create a kind of artistic conception and emotional appeal,and therefore only the teaching focused on the poetic style can make students genuinely grasp the following:such beautiful scenery,wonderful places and characters,and charming human nature are integrated into the beautiful poetic Xiangxi.As teaching researchers,it is necessary for us to combine the ideological and artistic value of Border Town to think about the value of Chinese education of Shen Congwen’s novel from the perspective of Chinese teaching.This thesis consists of introduction,text and conclusion.The introduction is composed of three parts.Firstly,the reasons and research significance of this thesis are clarified.The researchers will combine the requirements of Chinese new curriculum standards on literature education and popularization as well as compilation of teaching materials,to make a reflection and statement on the Chinese education value of Border Town by Shen Congwen.Secondly,the present research status and development trend of this study are emphasized,so as to improve the starting point of this paper based on the integration of existing resources.At last,the research methods and approaches of this thesis are summarized.The text consists of five chapters.Chapter 1(The Writer’s Impression and Creation of Border Town)studies the public image and artistic spiritual trace,and emphasizes the artistic value of Border Town and acclaims it to be the perfect representative of the poetic local novels.Chapter 2(Chinese Education Value of Border Town by Shen Congwen)takes art characteristics of the works for reference to achieve the combination with the relevant requirements of new curriculum standards as well as the present situation and the plight of the contemporary Chinese teaching."Expression model of Chinese language with both literal and textured beauty","writing training model of complex narration","source of aesthetic experiences characterized by poetic melancholy",and "social cultural treasure of reflecting folk" are the four aspects of education value embodied in the novel Border Town which is discussed in this thesis.Chapter 3(Poetic Style of Border Town by Shen Congwen)employs "poetic description" as the keyword to study the poetic world,artistic conception,language,structure and the melancholy that clings to the poetic style.By paying significant attention to the poetic appearance of the novel,this chapter further analyzes melancholy and loneliness immerged in the elegant description of Border Town,and improves the overall understanding of its poetic description.Chapter 4(Teaching interpretation and Teaching Case Review of Border Town<Excerpts>by Shen Congwen)attempts to accomplish literary appreciation and to carry out analysis of teaching cases from top teachers,by taking Su version of text excerpts as example.We will be expected to perceive that the sparks of teaching and research will be inspired in varied forms for the same class,which is just constructive to the dissemination of Chinese education value of Border Town by Shen Congwen.Chapter 5(Study of Teaching Practice of Poetic Border Town by Shen Congwen)attaches significance to the research of application.By comprehensively taking advantage of the research results in the former four chapters,and highlighting the poetic style,this chapter is focused upon teaching design and proposes guidance suggestions for reading the whole book of Border Town.The conclusion summarizes the full text and illustrates once more the significance of Shen Congwen’s Border Town for Chinese modern literature and Chinese education in secondary school.
