Franz Liszt's Annees de Pelerinage is a set of remarkable continuous solo piano works, which almost run through Liszt's full compositional career. Many people consider that Liszt composed music with performance techniques in previously unimagined heights;however, expressive musical content is vacant and even ignored.Annees de Pelerinage is in sharp contrast to Liszt's brilliant, dazzling music and reflects his life.In the musical expression of this work,Liszt does not use many tough techniques, but presents a romantic-poem conception.Through analyzing the Vallee d'Obermann,it becomes clear that the music is profound and meaningful because Liszt pays special attention to the combination of music and art.In his final version,he lessens the showy technical parts and the passionate emotion in order to purify the musical expression and emotion. He did not intend to show off technique in this work, though he succeeded in expressing the ultimate Romantic music in a balance of expression and technicality.
