The oratorio,as the name implies,is a religious music genre associated with western religious content,so its content is mostly derived from the biblical story,which originated from the medieval narrative poem.In the 17 th century,the opera was accompanied by large vocal music genres such as opera and cantata,and the performance of drama was widely and widely developed during this period.It can be said that it is a means of expression and drama content through music,although religion has a great proportion in it but it does not have religious ritualism.Germany is one of the earliest countries in Europe to create an oratorio,and the number of composers who write oratorio in Germany is not a minority.Germany's first recorded music composer of the qing dynasty is a role model for the creation of the opera.Early composers such as taylorman,Bach,and Handel were among the early composers who produced the classic orchards.In the context of such a rich history,it is not surprising that Mendelssohn returned to the creation of the oratorio in the 19 th century.Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy,1809-1847,was one of the important composers in the German romantic period,and made outstanding contributions to the development of music in Germany.Music in the romantic period broke the shackles of religion to a great extent and began to advocate the expression of individuality and emotion.Most of Mendelssohn's music also adapted to the trend of the time,with romantic freedom and emotional expression,and the image of its "music landscape master" was deeply branded in people's minds.However,in the romantic period of freedom and personality,Mendelssohn still maintained his religious feelings.His thoughts gradually changed from the experiences of family,society and life,and all these changes laid the foundation for the creation of the religious cult of Elijah.Mendelssohn's "elias" is a romantic period in which the world loves it,and is a monumental achievement in the history of German oratorio.In the minds of Mendelssohn,elias is as a romantic hero temperament ideal personality to shape and performance,through the full of romantic music interpretation solemn religious content and color,the perfect fusion of emotion and religion makes cantata music creation to a new level.This paper focuses on Mendelssohn's oratorio "Elijah" as the research object."in the period of romanticism,is there still a rich religious feeling in the oratorio?" Analyze this problem,this paper respectively from the cantata history and Mendelssohn's thought of music,and works of creative background,style characteristics,religious ideas,theme,harmony,etc in this paper,through analyzing the religious music works of the romantic period and Mendelssohn's religious feelings,to deepen the understanding of Mendelssohn creation thought and connotation of the subject matter,so that we better understand the romantic period religious subjects.
