Research On The Book-cutting Of Ankang Zhang In The Middle And Late Qing Dynasty

In Qing dynasty,the block printing which was a traditional publishing way has becoming very flouring.During this period,the block printing has been spread across the whole country,there’s few difference between the publish center and the other。And the block printing of Qing dynasty is most flouring in the history of Shaanxi block printing.In fact,it’s the scholars and businessman’s blocking printing activities made it so flouring.Among them,Zhang Pengfei,who was lived in late nineteenth century,was a great representative.The block printing activity of Zhang Pengfei and his posterity lasted for over seventy years,and was famous for“Lai Lu Tang",which means a deer’s coming.The Zhangs block printing activity could be divided into three periods.The first period was started in 1829,in Chengdu,Sichuan Province,and till 1836,lasted for eight years.The second period lasted for about twenty years,till 1856,one year before Zhang Pengfei was passed away.It’s the most prosperous period of Zhang Pengfei’s carving career,most of Zhang Pengfei’works was produced During this period.The third also the last period was Zhang Pengfei’s posterity’s carving activity,and it’s the period of Guangxu.In this period,with Zhang Pengfei’s death and his family were in trouble,the carving activity of the Zhangs was went downhill till ended.Over the seventy years,the Lai Lu Tang published more than two hundred books.And with my researching,there are about one eighty kinds of books can be found today,and about one hundred and five books’ name can be known.The eighty kinds of books are distributed all over China,such as Shaanxi,Sichuan and so on.The book which were published by Lai Lu Tang not only spread all over the country,and also were republished by other about ten publishing unit.And the famous academy in Shaanxi such as WEIJING ACADEMY and QINGLU ACADEMY,the famous temple like the Shaolin temple,the famous scholar like Ma Guohan,He Ruilin,Chen Yuan,Wu Mei,Zhang Shuliang also collected Lai Lu Tang’s book.And many publishing houses will still choose the Lai Lu Tang edition to photocopy.As Zhang Pengfei lived in a period which was full of war and disaster,he always had a strong view of practice,and this view also influenced his carving activity.His carving so also was a unfortunate one’s contribution to that unfortunate world.At the same time,Zhang Pengfei set bookstores in Chengdu,Sichuan province and Ankang,Shaanxi province to sell his books.With his busyness of books was developing,Zhang Pengfei kept touch with officials and scholars in Shaanxi,Sichuan and the capital.And with selling,giving his books and wrote to these people,he made a contribution to Ankang’s education,culture.And what’s more,as a great publisher,he also should have a position in the history of Shaanxi,even China.
