The Study Of The Evolution Of The Contemporary Watercolor Block Printing In Jiangsu Province

China is the hometown and cradle of engraving. The ancient Chinese engraving was first made of ink and wash and watery color. Therefore, the history of the Chinese ancient engraving is virtually the history of the evolution of Chinese watercolor block printing. Of the four types of contemporary Chinese watercolor block printing and of the comprehensive engravings, only watercolor block printing is the extension of Chinese national style. The other types all borrowed their forms from the west. The contemporary watercolor block printing in Jiangsu Province has a history of over two thousand years. It has occupied its own place in Chinese Art and won great reputation for its unique aesthetic quality and lyric style. It has come into being and developed itself for twenty-five (1980-2005) years, during which great changes have taken place in China. Social existence determines social ideology. Art (watercolor block printing), as the materialized form of ideology, has unavoidably taken a look different from the past with the social changes and retained its reasonable core at the same time. It is possible and also necessary for us to sort out, review and summarize the past history and grasp the laws of its evolution, with the hope that it might be of some benefits for the creation of art in future.Based on these considerations, the present thesis is structured as follows: Chapter One: the traditional patterns of watercolor block printing in Jiangsu Province. From the evolution and development of its patterns, this chapter attempted to sort out the nourishments that the core of traditional watercolor block printing had brought to the modern and contemporary watercolor block printing in Jiangsu Province.
