Opera rising among the ordinary people, the language is vulgar at the early stage, then, quite a long time it was not accepted by orthodoxy. The finding applies perfectly to the Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties which came into being at an early age.A lot of opera literature has been lost.Though the name of Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties is numerous(more than 200 in record),the complete versions coming down from the past were no more than 20,the thesis is totally about the remains. The plots of Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties were mainly about love romances, describing the joys and sorrows of the male roles and the female roles, expressing the people's yearning and pursuit of love and good life.In Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties, the characters of the male role always be a brilliant scholar, the young scholar was taken as son-in-law by the dignitary after they pass the imperial exams;and the female role just an ordinary woman, they are reasonable and moral, they insist the ruler of “do not re-marry”;after he characters of the male role and the female role through several tests, they get together and have a happy ending, which tend to be stereotyped.By using literature research, text analysis, comparative approach, and so on,this thesis puts emphasis on the study of the characters, plots and stereotype of love romances in Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties. The thesis consists of four chapters. The preface mainly explains the origin of the topic, the definition of the research object and the literature review.Chapter 1 analyses the characters of the male role and the female role in Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties. The image of the early scholars are different from that of the complete versions coming down from the past since the literati began to write versions of Southern Opera, which led to the change of the image.Chapter 2 analyses the crucial plots of love romances in Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties: Imperial Exams, select a son-in-law and forced to remarry. At that time, the plot of “selecting a son-in-law who succeeded in imperial exams” was very popular. In the story, the young scholar was taken as son-in-law by the dignitary and should bear the bride's family name after he succeeded in the highest imperial examinations. While the young scholar went to attend the examinations,if he hadn't sent back any messages for a long time, the female role would be forced to remarry by the head of the family, the parents-in-law,etc.This chapter mainly elaborates on the social background resulting in these phenomena.Chapter 3 mainly researches into the endings of love romances in Southern Opera in Song and Yuan Dynasties. These works tend to be stereotyped and had a lot in common in characters, plots and endings.Though all the works had happy endings, some of them had tragic perception.Besides the stereotype and happy endings, this chapter also elaborates on the problems in Southern Opera, such as spoiler, fatalism and beliefs in ghosts and gods, etc.
