The present paper focuses on the art history referring to cats.The exploration and analysis are based on the author’s experience of making woodblock printing.Given that cats represent an important theme of artistic work,the paper first reviews the history of pet cats,reasoning the symbiotic relation between humans and cats sociologically,philosophically and religiously.However,one cannot ignore that the cats’ role in today’s society is still changing.It may also differ from country to country,from region to region.Considering that there are cats both in artworks and artists’ workplaces/homes,it is necessary to value the evaluate the influence of cats on the art of the human society.Chapter two compares several typical visual artworks featuring cats so as to interpret the very metaphor.Taking the angle of trying to understand the artists’ aims,it explains how and why cats were introduced to these artworks.The last chapter concentrates on the author’s art practice using woodblock printing as the media and cats as the theme.It also involves the author’s thoughts on both the subject and the process.,which started off turning preparatory drawings into the design of every single block and gradually turned into re-editing and re-using the woodblocks.It,thus,reconsiders not only the process of woodblock printing but its potency of eliciting numerous explanation and emotions as well.
