Abstract/Summary:
In recent years, many new theatres have been built in cities across China. These new theatres have been a great improvement on the problem of cultural facility inadequacy in some regions, especially in county-level cities. However, how to run these new theatres effectively and realize their potentials has become an important topic that must be taken seriously by cultural policy-makers and art managers.China’s theatre and performance industry is still at the initial stage, and its modern cultural market system is underdeveloped. It is not uncommon that theatres lose more money as they organize more performances.Due to lack of funding, many theatres are not sufficiently used, show inadequate lever of public-serving capability,or are even used for non-theatrical purposes, resulting in waste of theater resources. With this problem in mind, this thesis studies the financing and sponsorship work of NCPA in the past ten years since its opening.Comparing the experience of Chinese theatres and foreign theatres and that of other industries, this thesis provides a systematic analysis of multi-source financing for theatres, the proper use of funding, and the effective utilization of performance resources,in the hope of giving some referential ideas to fellow personnel in our industry. This thesis includes four chapters:Chapter Ⅰ describes the history and status quote of the financing and sponsorship of performing arts organizations, analyzes the revenue structure of theatres based on historic and current situations, and points out that financing and sponsorship are indispensible in the development of a theatre.Chapter Ⅱ provides a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the financing and sponsorship models of NCPA,studying such aspects as NCPA’s construction history, operation status, strategic planning and top-level design, organizational structure, government subsidy & sponsored operation, keys to its success, and challenges that it is currently facing.Chapter Ⅲ studies the financing and sponsorship models of Chinese and foreign theatres, looking at the experience of the same industry and different industry from the perspectives of benchmarking management, market competition, and socialized marketing, hoping that the experience of others can help the theatre industry to raise fund.Chapter Ⅳ summarizes the financing and sponsorship models of NCPA,and proposes a theatre financing and sponsorship mindset that are more extensively applicable, offering some reference for fellow workers in the same industry.
