In the process of some social interactions, facial cues are an effective way for us to acknowledge someone who are not familiar with us.And the exploration of face preference has always been the focus in academic research field.Previous studies have demonstrated that facial appearance affects social perception. In recruitment situation, the candidate's facial appearance may be a crucial factor to affect hiring decisions, such as sexual dimorphism cues.Studies about sexual dimorphism cues affecting face preference have appealed to many researchers recently.Sexual dimorphism cues(masculine vs.feminine)refer to the differences between boys and girls in the external appearance from the age of puberty. It is widely believed that people with masculine faces are more competent and dominant, and those with feminine faces are more gentle and affable. This phenomenon can be regarded as a kind of gender stereotype. There are some types of occupations in the society that require workers with masculine features, while some types of occupations require workers with feminine features. The development of today's society needs to combine construction of spiritual civilization and material civilization to promote the development of productive forces and improve the spiritual and cultural quality of the whole people. In this study, these two types of occupations are named respectively as occupations of spiritual civilization(feminine features)and occupations of material civilization(masculine features). Therefore, the purpose of the present study is to explore whether there exists a matching progress between the two types of occupations(occupations of spiritual civilization and occupations of material civilization)and candidates' appearance. The present study included two experiments.Eye Link 1000 plus eye tracker with a 1000 Hz sample rate was used in experiment 1 to record the participants' eye movements when these participants made their hiring decisions. Each pair of faces consisted of a masculine male face and a feminine male face. Each feminine male face was created by morphing a male face and a female face, each masculine male face was created by morphing two male faces.Behavioral data suggested a match between facial appearance and occupations. The eye movement data suggested that(1)The participants' first fixation time and first fixation duration were significantly longer for the masculine male faces than feminine ones for both type of occupations. This implied that people paid a priority attention on the highly attractive faces,(2)The participants' dwell time and fixation count were significantly longer or greater for the masculine male faces than feminine ones for the occupations of material civilization,(3)The participants' dwell time and fixation count were significantly longer or greater for the feminine male faces than masculine ones for the occupations of spiritual civilization. In experiment 2,two behavior experiments(experiment 2a,experiment 2b)based on different facial materials were carried out to explore the effect of the sexual dimorphic cues on hiring decisions and record participants' conscious hiring decisions. The results of two behavior experiments were extremely similar, which suggested that participants would significantly be inclined to choose the men with feminine faces just for the occupations of spiritual civilization.Taking all these findings into consideration, conclusions are as follows(1)Men with masculine faces are more preferred in the occupations of material civilization and men with feminine faces are more preferred in the occupations of spiritual civilization.(2)Men with high face attractiveness are more likely to succeed in recruitment market.
