Objective: Total joint arthroplasty(TJA),especially total hip arthroplasty(THA),has been shown as one of the most successful and satisfying orthopedic surgeries during the past thirty years.Recently, the surgery techniques of THA have undergone great changes, increasing orthopaedic surgeons did minimally invasive surgery, including THA.Thus,a novel minimally invasive surgical technique of the Super-Path(supercapsular percutaneously assisted total hip)arthroplasty was first reported in 2011.The purpose of this study was to compare the Super-Path approach with the conventional posterolateral approach,in terms of early clinical results and complications. Methods: A total of thirty-eight consecutive femoral neck fracture patients were randomly divided into two groups.Eighteen patients(Super-Path approach Group)were operated using the Super-Path approach while another twenty patients(posterolateral approach Group)were operated with the Posterolateral approach. The duration of operation time(minutes),volume of blood loss, transfusion rate and complication rate were recorded after surgery. The Harris hip score were evaluated at the 7-day follow-up,28-day follow-up and the last follow-up in outpatient service. Results: No significant difference was detected in complication rate between Super-Path approach and conventional posterolateral approach. The transfusion rate and the volume of blood loss were significantly lower in Super-Path Group. In addition, the Harris hip score for seven-day follow-up and one-month follow-up were significantly higher in Super-Path Group. Conclusion: This prospective randomized study indicates that The Super-Path hip arthroplasty significantly decreases the volume of blood loss and transfusion rate. Moreover,it also significantly increases the Harris hip score after surgery.Super-Path approach has advantage in helping patients achieve early recovery and rehabilitation.
