From "The Debate Between Shaoyang Syndrome And Bupleurum Syndrome", The Lingnan Physician Chen Botan's Thought Of Focusing On Stomach Qi Is Discussed

Chen Botan,a Febrile doctors of Lingnan area,devoted all his life to the study of Zhang Zhongjing's Treatise on Febrile Diseases,and wrote Review of Treatise on Febrile Diseases.However,the full text was classical Chinese style that is complex and difficult to understand,there are few scholars studying this book consequently.Mr.Chen was a teacher and thus defined basic concepts at the beginning of the book by adding explanatory notes,approaches,reading methods,etc.so as to lay a foundation for our understanding of the book.In explanatory notes and reading methods,Mr.Chen proposed the following arguments that “Syndrome of decoction CHAI HU of TAIYANG can not be categorized as SHAOYANG disease” and “Some people mistook syndrome of decoction CHAIHU of TAIYANG as Shaoyang syndrome”.He pointed out that syndrome of decoction CHAIHU(radix bupleuri)of TAIYANG was not equal to SHAOYANG syndrome,but exhibiting intimate correlation.Syndrome of decoction CHAIHU can be divided into syndrome of decoction CHAIHU of TAIYANG and YANGMING,whoseessence is SHAOYANG before suffering from diseases.Decoction CHAIHU and SHAOYANG depend on each other to eliminate or remove pathogenic factors,and can avoid SHAOYANG developing as a disease.Furthermore,Mr.Chen also reminded that much attention should be paid on stomach Qi,which is the basis of SHAOYANG and the premise of syndrome of decoction CHAIHU prescribing.Mr.Chen was from Xinhui regions in Guangdong province,located in Lingnan area,many doctors have proposed that Lingnan folks have spleen and stomach weakness commonly.Mr.Chen had actually a deeper understanding,which might be one of the reasons to explain his emphasis on stomach Qi.With respect to the above,this topic intends to summarize Mr.Chen's understanding on the position,disease patterns,pulse condition and therapies of SHAOYANG syndrome and syndrome of decoction CHAIHU in Review of Treatise on Typhoid Fever,to explain categorized formula of CHAIHU Decoction in detail,to analyze Mr.Chen's unique dialectical thinking,and to realize Mr.Chen's academic thought of emphasizing stomach Qi.
