Urban public transportation is a matter vital to national well-being and people's livelihood, and also an important part of urban construction.Shenzhen has made great progress in developing transit metropolis with intelligent transportation systems over these years, which provides the residents great commuting experience. With the rapid development of social economy, rural living standards in Shenzhen improve, which leads to higher demanding on urban public transport services from the commuters.Owing to the contradiction between the underdeveloped transportation and people's ever-growing needs for different modes of transportation, residents face many traffic problems on their daily commute. In the age of big data, customized bus has been implemented successfully in many countries.Qingdao launched the first customized bus in China in 2013,followed by many other cities. As capital injects to the market, the customized bus business in Shenzhen booms after its launch in March,2014.This paper analyzes the characteristics such as the operation mode, route distribution and spatial distribution of Shenzhen customized bus,its advantage against conventional bus,its subsidiary role in conventional public transit network and how customized bus contributes to intra-city commuting, which provides a theoretical reference for the development of customized bus transit system in other cities. This paper includes 7 parts. The first part introduces the background, significance, theory, method, and framework of the research. The second part expounds the structure, system characteristics and necessities of customized bus transit system. The third part discusses the development status of customized bus in Shenzhen and its market operation mode.A GIS database is created in the fourth part based on the routes of Shenzhen's customized bus,for the purpose of analyzing its advantage against conventional bus and contribution to intra-city commuting. In the fifth part, some origin-destination intensive districts are chosen as typical cases in order to take a further step in the subsidiary role of customized bus in conventional public transit network on the basis of the overall situation of Shenzhen. The sixth part conducts passenger interviews and surveys to better understand the current use of customized bus in Shenzhen. The closing part gives the conclusions and offers proposals for sustainable development of urban public transit system. The paper presents some conclusions of this research.(1)The public transportation, seen as a social welfare program,is incompatible with its market-oriented management. The customized bus transit system in Shenzhen can be a classic case for other cities to study.State-owned enterprises stand out as dominated operators in public transportation system or cooperate with private Internet companies to require utility maximization.(2)Shenzhen Customized Bus mainly contacts the commuters inside and outside the customs for medium and long-distance travel.Medium and long-distance routes have advantages over conventional bus lines in terms of line efficiency and commuting time savings.(3)The service population for custom bus services mainly resides in commercial houses outside the customs and they are employed in the customs, which is a characterization of the balance between commuting costs and housing costs.(4)The Customized bus is a certain extent to make up for the lack of regular public transport, and plays a supplementary role.Customized bus helps solve some traffic and travel problems that conventional transportation fails to.Appropriate development of custom buses can better attract residents' travel mode to the public transportation system and improve system service levels, which will help optimize the public transportation system.
