Regional economic development is often accompanied by the evolution of economic spatial patterns. From 2005 to 2015,Guangdong Province not only consistently ranked first in the country in terms of total economic output, but also maintained an economic growth rate higher than the national average, which is the engine of national economic growth. At the same time, its economic spatial structure has gradually shifted from non-equilibrium to equilibrium. However, the problem of unbalanced economic development due to the long-term unbalanced development strategy still exists.Changes in the external economic environment have also increased pressure on the economic transformation of the province. It is urgent to explore the evolutionary pattern of the economic spatial pattern of Guangdong Province, optimize the spatial structure of the economy, then promote the sustained and stable growth of the regional economy. This article first briefly reviews the research on the spatial structure of regional economy and expounds relevant concepts and theories.Secondly, the author analyzes the evolution process of county economic development in Guangdong Province from the perspectives of the evolution of time series, spatial transfer, and the evolution of spatial association pattern. Then qualitatively describe the influencing factors of the economic spatial structure evolution in Guangdong Province, and use the panel data spatial econometric model for empirical analysis. Finally, from the optimization and development of the Pearl River Delta and the development of the economy in the east, west and north of Guangdong, the paper puts forward some policy suggestions for optimizing the spatial structure of Guangdong's economy. The results of the study show that:Although the level of economic development in all districts and counties of Guangdong province has been on the rise, the overall degree of agglomeration has decreased, and the economic development gap has narrowed, the existence of path dependence and club convergence has not caused fundamental changes in the“core-periphery” structure of county economic development.Location conditions, capital investment, industrial structure, urbanization level, and regional policies play an important role in the evolution of the economic spatial structure of Guangdong Province. The economic development of the whole province and sub-region in Guangdong Province shows a strong geographic correlation. The secondary industry, fiscal expenditure, and fixed asset investment have a significant role in promoting the economic development of the Guangdong Province, the Pearl River Delta, and the non-Pearl River Delta, but the role of urbanization and the tertiary industry is still insufficient.Opening up to the outside world has a positive role in promoting the economic development of the Pearl River Delta, but it has not fully played its role in promoting the economic development of the Guangdong Province as a whole and the non-Pearl River Delta.
