Gender concept is a continuously debate and study in the research studies.The gender concept had its influenced from the media.Throughout this time the feminist study has been a lot discuss,but only few studies and researchers study about the masculinity especially the soft masculinity.Masculinity not only in Indonesia and China are keeps on transforming.There is a lot of factor that will influence the changing of masculinity such as culture and media,economy movement,knowledge,technologies,industry,etc.For these past years,the masculinity is changing to more a soft and gentle direction rather than hard and strong masculinity.The masculinity is no longer portrays with well build body and muscular,instead it's not the era for the muscular man anymore.The more gentle and soft looking masculinity is the trend for nowadays.Nowadays,we can find the soft masculinity through the popular culture such as Asian drama or advertising.Soft masculinity also have its roots from the China,Japan,and South Korea history.China for example already mentioned about the soft masculinity through the Confucius era.During the Confucius,the soft masculinity was portray with the scholar who known for his intelligence.Meanwhile for this moment,instead of scholar the soft masculinity is known with the popular idol.Not only in China,but this study also compare it to another country,which is Indonesia.Although Indonesia haven't show the soft masculinity like China's culture,there is also rapid changing in Indonesia's masculinities.Comparing to China's masculinity,Indonesia's masculinity is more into the hard and strong masculinity.The comparison of these two countries will be explained in more detail with the support of the theories.The movement of soft masculinity is supported with the popular culture.Not only the popular culture but also the rising movement of Asian 'flower Boy'.The Flower Boy is popular with their appearance,white milky skin,long lengs,wavy hair,stylish clothes;they are the picture of male in the Japanese comics.The 'Flower Boy' image came into the popular culture through the Pop Idols.Asian's music industry is known for their Popular idol,for example Lu Han that will be discussed a lot in this research.To see the masculinity from both countries,the author using the cover magazine as the medium tool to represents the masculinities.The cover magazine is chosen because media and advertising play a great deal to influence the masculinity.In China,the advertising is dominate with the popular idol meanwhile in Indonesia is dominated with the celebrities.The celebrities and media can create the image of ideal masculinity.The cover images with the feminine masculine men represents will be analyzed for the characteristic in the pose and gaze.The theory of Political Economy of Communication by Vincent Mosco and other theory in the literature review will add how the concept of feminine masculine become the new man concept of masculinity.The magazines that representing China are Vogue Me and Grazia China,meanwhile for Indonesia they are Grazia Indonesia and August Man.Through these covers magazine and popular culture,the soft masculinity will be explained in more detail to have the better understanding of the masculinity movement.
